How to dry Herbs?

9620618_sThe best way to dry herbs is to make little bunches and tie them upside down on a line in a cool, dry and drafty place.  You should have a small amount so that the circulating air can dry the herbs to the core…You may  want to cover them with a cloth to prevent accumulation of dust.  Avoid humid areas.  The faster it drys the better for the herbs.  No direct sunlight.

2) Milk Thistle according to the University of Maryland Medical Center

Milk thistle (Silybum marianum) has been used for 2,000 years as an herbal remedy for a variety of ailments, particularly liver, kidney, and gall bladder problems. Several scientific studies suggest that substances in milk thistle (especially a flavonoid called silymarin) protect the liver from toxins, including certain drugs such as acetaminophen (Tylenol), which can cause liver damage in high doses. Silymarin has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, and it may help the liver repair itself by growing new cells.

According to WebMDMilk Thistle also known to some people Mary Thistle and Holy Thistle (silymarin) is a flowering herb related to the daisy and ragweed family.  It is a native to Mediterranean countries.

It is a natural treatment for liver problems include cirrhosis, jaundice, hepatitis and gallbladder disorders.  Lowers cholesterol levels, help diabetes in people who have type 2 diabetes and cirrhosis.  Reduce growth of cancer cells in breast, cervical, and prostate cancers.

THE ACTIVE INGREDIENT OF MILK THISTLE:The active ingredient — the one that protects the liver — in milk thistle is known as silymarin, a chemical extracted from the seeds. Silymarin is actually a group of flavonoids (silibinin, silidianin, and silicristin), which are thought to help repair liver cells damaged by alcohol and other toxic substances. Silymarin also keeps new liver cells from being destroyed by these same toxins. It reduces inflammation (which is why it is often suggested for people with liver inflammation or hepatitis) and is a strong antioxidant. Most milk thistle products are standardized preparations made from the seeds of the plant. Most preparations are standardized to contain 70 – 80% of silymarin.

The History of the Maqui Berry

The small, purple berry known as the Patogonian Superfruit is found only in the Patagonia region of South America, from Chile to Antarctica. Patagonia is bordered by two oceans, tucked safely away from large amounts of human pollution. This allows the region to remain clean and pristine, a perfect environment for the maqui berry to flourish.

The Mapuche Indians of Southern and Central Chili have known of the secret of the maqui berry for hundreds of years. The Mapuche revered the maqui berry as a source of healing, using it to cure ulcers, sore throats, fever, diarrhea, hemorrhoids, and tumors. Mapuche women were given maqui berry to assist them through childbirth and Mapuche warriors drank maqui berry beverages several times a day to give them strength and stamina during battles.

The Maqui berry was a sacred plant to the Mapuche. They believed that the shrub, which means “benevolence and peaceful intention”, was a symbol of healing and strength. In fact the Mapuche Indians have historically enjoyed the longest lifespan of any ethnic group on earth. The Mapuche are the only tribe to remain unconquered for more than 300 years, settling into a peace treaty with the Spanish in recent times, but without defeat. Could this longevity and success be due to the incorporation of the maqui berry in the diet of the Mapuche?
